Origin

In India, Cardamom was used as a medicinal herb in the early 4th century BC. Whereas, it was used more for its digestive properties by the Greeks and Romans. Cardamom is a more popular spice than Cinnamon in Scandinavian countries. Cardamom is one of the most popular spices in the Arab world, as they consider Cardamom coffee to be a symbol of hospitality and prestige. Cardamom comes from India, Sri Lanka and Guatemala. Whole Cardamom pods come from India while the seeds are imported from Guatemala. Indian Cardamom is considered to be of a premium quality.

Use

Cardamom is used extensively in Indian cuisine in both savory as well as sweet dishes. It's used in curries, desserts and for making flavored teas and coffees. It is used in spice blends such as garam masala and curry powder. Cardamom is also used in Danish pastries, specialty breads and coffee cake. In the Scandinavian countries, it is added to some baked goods like breads. Most of the world's Cardamom crop is used as a flavoring for coffee in Arab countries. Popping a couple Cardamom seeds in the mouth gets rid of bad breath giving you a sweet perfumy breath.

TIP : Adding just a little Cardamom to tea and ground coffee before brewing, gives your tea and coffee a wonderful flavor and aroma.
