Description

Celery seed is the dried fruit of the Apium Graveolens. It is a biennial in the parsley family. Celery seed is related to the celery plant, the vegetable. However, it's not identical. The seeds are brown in color and usually very tiny, measuring about 1/16th of an inch. Celery Seed has a Celery, Fennel and Anise like aroma. It tastes like table celery with a warm, slightly bitter, aromatic flavor.

Origin

Celery Seed is indigenous to India and China. France is also a producer of a small quantity of Celery. Indian Celery Seed is considered premium due to its strong flavor and color. The Chinese variety is also similar to the Indian variety of Celery Seed. However, the Chinese variety is smaller with a milder taste. The French Variety on the other hand, is slightly darker and milder in taste. Celery was popular among the Greeks and the Romans for its medicinal purposes. It was believed that Celery was an aphrodisiac. Celery actually dates back to "smallage" which was a wild and bitter plant.

Use

Celery is commonly used in celery salt, pickling, salad dressings, breads, soups and vegetables. It also goes quite well with tomatoes. Celery seed is often used in curry spice blends and bouquet garni. It is also used in German Dishes, Russian and Italian cuisines.
