Description
Fennel Seed is the green dried, ripe fruit of Foeniculum Vulgare. Foeniculum Vulgare is a tall and hardy perennial plant. This plant has finely divided green feathery foliage with golden yellow flowers. Fennel seeds are green and oval shaped. These oval seeds form in clusters and are harvested when they harden. Fennel has a sweet anise-like or slightly a licorice-like flavor, but less intense. It has a slightly minty undertone with musty/green flavor notes.

Origin
Most of the Fennel, today, comes from India, China, Turkey and Egypt. Fennel was once indigenous only to the Mediterranean region.
The ancient Greeks considered Fennel a symbol of success. Ancients also believed that Fennel helped in improving eyesight and helped increase strength. Nowadays, in India, Fennel Seed is widely used as an after-meal breath-freshner. Fennel also helps in digestion.
