Description

Ginger is the dried tuberous root of Zinziber Officinale. Zinziber Officinale is a perennial herb plant that grows about two to three feet tall. The thick knobby shaped roots, which are about six inches long, are dug up after the leaves of the plant have dried off. Ginger has a slightly biting and hot flavor note. It has a unique combination of aromas like lemon, citrussy, musty/earthy aromas. Ginger is also rich slightly sweet, woody and warming to taste. Crystallized Ginger is fresh Ginger Root that is cooked in sugar syrup and then dried.

Origin

Ginger mainly comes from India, China and Jamaica. Crystallized Ginger, however, comes from Australia.
Indians and Chinese were the first cultivators of Ginger. Ginger was one of the important spices that led to the opening of the spice trade routes.

Use

Ginger is widely used in various cuisines through out the world. It is used in Indian curries, European, Chinese and Japanese cuisines. Traditionally, Ginger is used in ginger ale, holiday gingerbread cookies, holiday gingerbread house, gingersnaps. Ginger is also used to make flavored tea.
