Fortified wine is made by adding measures of brandy before or during the fermentation process to stabilize the wine. This process of adding Brandy makes these wines high in alcohol. Fortified Wines are also sweeter than table wines.
Fortified wines are usually not served during meals. However, these wines are often used in cooking. These wines are perfect for after dinner or at other times when relaxed conversation and a good wine can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace.
There are four main types of fortified wines. Port, Sherry (named for Jerez, its Spanish birthplace), Madeira (pronounced "Muh-dehra", named for the island southwest of Portugal, on which it is made) and Marsala (the best known fortified wine of Italy). |
