White wines are well, not white at all. In fact, these wines are more straw-yellow to golden to even pale green colored. This is due to the fact that white wine is made from the grape juice and grape skin of green, gold or yellowish colored grapes. This wine is also made from just the juice (not the skin) of select red grapes. For example, some Champagnes.
Compared to red wines, white wines are more refreshing and lighter in both style and taste. Due to these characteristics, these wines are really good for spring and summer occasions. White wines get their flavor qualities from grapefruit, citrus, pear, apple, melon, pineapple, lemon, lime, butter, honey, floral, earthy, and sometimes a hint of vanilla. White wines can dry, sweet or semi-sweet.
White wines are produced all over the world but the most famous are probably those made from the Chardonnay grape in France. There are different white wine grape varieties, such as the one mentioned above, Chardonnay then there's Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and many other white wine grape varietals.
White wine pairs quite well with light foods, poultry, seafood, pasta dishes with light sauces, fresh salads.
White wine tastes best when served chilled.
